My name is Olga Marina Cumatz Vásquez, and I was born the 28 of July, 1980, in the little community of Caserío Paquisis, of the Aldea Pixabaj, in Sololá department. My parents are Manuel Cumatz Pecher and Paulina Vasquez Xoquic. My father is a campesino, and my mother works in the home. I am the fourth of nine children, and I have five brothers and three sisters.
I belong to the Kaqchikel Maya culture and my family has spoken the Kaqchikel language my entire life. I did not begin to speak Spanish until I was six years old and entered into primary school, which I attended for six years in my pueblo. After I finished primary school, I spent the junior high school years studying at San Andres Semetabaj, Sololaj, in the Instituto Internado de mujeres Indigenas. After that I studied at the Catholic Aid Institute in Antigua, Guatemala, where I graduated with the degree of Teacher of Urban Primary Education. At the present time I am in my second year of studies in the field of economics at San Carlos University in Quetzaltenango.
I entered Centro Maya's program of scholarships in 1999, and have greatly enjoyed being part of it. I am very happy that the teachers and owners of the language school have the desire to help Maya women like myself who would have no other opportunity to attend the university.
