Centro Maya Xela ACTIVITIES

Centro Maya Xela offers a diverse variety of activities outside of normal class times. Each week activities are programmed in the following manner: Monday-movie, Tuesday-lecture, Wednesday-volunteer project, Thursday-excursion, Friday-dinner and salsa and merengue class.

Both the movies and the lectures deal with social problems, history, the political situation, economics, immigration to the United States, free trade treaties, education, Mayan culture, Mayan spirituality, Mayan dress, and other topics having to do with Guatemala and Latin America.

Among the places to visit are: Momostenango (to see the production of ponchos and rugs), San Francisco El Alto (to see the biggest traditional market in Central America), San Andrés Xecul (to see the most picturesque church in Guatemala), Salcajá (to see the production of traditional weavings, caldo de frutas alcoholic fruit beverage, and the oldest church in Central America), Almolonga (to take a hot bath in the natural hot water from the volcanoes), Zunil (to visit San Simón, an indigenous saint, and the Cooperative of traditional weavings founded and directed by indigenous women), Fuentes Georginas (to swim in naturally hot water in the heart of the mountains), Ecosauna La Cumbre (to take a sauna or a Jacuzzi) and other places close to Xela (Quetzaltenango).

Centro Maya Xela offers a guide for visiting the mountains around the city (either by foot or on bicycle), climbing volcanoes, and visiting other places of interest to visitors. The guide is certified by the Guatemalan Tourism Institute. The guide's fees are paid by the students who use his services.
